NAFDAC, which also arrested five persons for selling the illicit products had raided Mile 3 and Mile 4 markets in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, and an oil mill markets in the Eleme Local Government Area.
The state Coordinator of the agency, Mrs. Mercy Ndukwe, said the raid was carried out by NAFDAC in collaboration with Intercontinental Distillers, brewer of Chelsea Dry Gin and Squadron Dark Rum.
Ndukwe explained that the raid became necessary after the agency received complaints by Intercontinental Distillers Limited that a large quantity of fake and adulterated alcoholic brand of Chelsea and Squadron drinks were being distributed in Port Harcourt.
She said, “In line with its statutory mandate, NAFDAC raided markets in Port Harcourt and its environs and impounded fake/adulterated Chelsea and Squadron worth over N4m.
“Officials of Intercontinental Distillers reported incidence of fake and adulterated products being circulated in markets in Rivers State.
“Surveillance was carried out in major markets and outlets where the products were indentified and afterwards NAFDAC in collaboration with officials of the company and detachment of policemen swooped on them and impounded the spurious products, arresting five persons in the process,” she said.
Calling on the general public to be vigilant and report any incidence of fake and adulterated products to NAFDAC for appropriate action, Ndukwe warned the people who were involved in the criminal act of faking and counterfeiting NAFDAC registered products in the country to desist from endangering the health of Nigerians or be ready to face the wrath of the law.
