Cesare Prandelli has resigned as Italy coach, after the Azzurris were eliminated from the 2014 World Cup.
Italy needed just a draw to qualify for the round of 16, but after they lost Claudio Marchisio because of a red card in the second half, they struggled to stay in the game.
Diego Godin rose highest to head home the winner, as the former World Cup winners became the latest big-name casualty to exit the tournament.
“I never wanted to hear that I was stealing the money of Italian tax payers,” he told reporters as he announced his decision at a post-match press conference.
Prandelli only signed a two-year extension to his current deal, shortly before the World Cup kicked off.
