There has been a long drawn battle between the Rivers State government and the National Judicial Council on who should become the State’s Chief Judge. The National Judicial Council has insisted on the most senior Judge occupying the position against the appointment, out of line being made by the state government.
In a letter, in which the Rivers State government is washing its hands off the responsibility of payment of all Rivers State Judiciary staff, the government has directed banks to stop the payment of salaries of all staff of the state judiciary from May 2014.The letter signed by the Accountant General of Rivers State, Ngozi Abu and Director, Treasury, Dagogo Abere, directed the banks to stop the payment until further notice.
The letter dated June 5, 2014 demanded full compliance with the directive, which was issued by the state Governor, Chibuike Amaechi.
